What is a Sports Teams (community)?

Many schools and community groups foster non profit sports teams. A community sports team is an entity that is focused around facilitating team participation in sports. The sports team is not privately owned or funded, but rather it’s developed for the benefit of the community itself. A sports team may need to perform fundraising, host events, and otherwise manage itself so that it can better facilitate the team’s performance.

Sports teams can range from community-involved events to school-related events. They are usually tax exempt, but they will need to show that they are not being operated for profit. They will need an EIN, and they will need to file their taxes every year, but they will be able to request tax exempt status. There is a special category for amateur athletic programs when filing for non profit status. Professional athletic programs will fall under for profit companies.
